Choosing a trail

So great is the demand for more trails that a new trail is opened almost every month, opening up more and more of some of the most unforgettable countryside in the world. Trails are operated by SAFCOL, nature conservation bodies, various parks boards, municipalities and many private land owners. These trails are planned and established either by the land owners themselves or by the owners with the assistance of private bodies, of which the Federation is a major role player.

Because there are so many trails at your disposal, choosing a trail can be fun and exiting, depending on your fitness, preference of scenery and time available. Each trail has its own uniqueness, offering panoramic views, wonderful wildlife, birdlife and plant life as well as fascinating geographical and historical significance. However, there are some important points to consider when choosing a trail:

Travel Distance

  • Try to avoid long, costly and tedious travelling time by choosing a trail relatively close to home.

Degree of Difficulty

  • It is recommended that beginners first attempt an easier route. Day routes are also available and is a good beginning for families that wish to try hiking as a family activity.

Facilities

  • These range from none on wilderness trails to huts with electricity and hot and cold running water.

Seasonality

  • You should take into account rain, wind, cold and heat. This will obviously influence your selection of clothing.

Special Interests

  • To make hiking more interesting get a field of interest: birds, trees, snakes, geology, archaeology, and experience more than just a hike.
